She is 17 years old and we had been noticing little things lately that told us she wasn't feeling well. And we could tell that she had lost some weight too. Since she was diagnosed last year with diabetes, we decided to take her in for a check-up. The good news is that her diabetes is still under control and there's no problem there. The not-so-good news is that she is beginning to have a little kidney trouble, not bad yet but we have to change her food again. It's a real problem trying to find a food that keeps both diabetes and kidney issues under control. It was hard for us to hear about the kidney problem, because kidney disease is what took her sister from us last year.
The vet also said that she had some pretty bad molars that really needed to come out - like, all of them! She had some of them removed about six years ago, and today he took out the rest. They have to put them under for this and surgically remove the teeth. Everything behind the canines is gone! I asked the doctor, "How will she eat?" But he said she has to have moist food anyway for her diet so it won't be a problem. And he said she will probably actually eat better now because her teeth won't be hurting her anymore. We really felt bad that we didn't know they were in that shape! It had been a year since her last check-up, and they had progressed that quickly.
Bless her heart, she is feeling a little woozy tonight! The vet gave her pain meds before we brought her home, and we just gave her another injection for the night. I hope she sleeps well and doesn't hurt! I'm not sure I could blog without my little blogging buddy helping me pick the right words! This is how I blog more times than not =^..^=
I have to say though, even after surgery she looks better than me in my bedtime scruffies and scrubbed face! :*D

She is beautiful. Our little Bits had to have some teeth removed recently, and also found she is diabetic. We will do just about anything for them, won't we?

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your baby, but it looks likes she's happy now. You are brave to give her a shot. I can't imagine doing that with either of ours. One has a fit when I try to just pick her up to sit on my lap!

Sorry to hear about the molar problem! Glad she will be feeling better soon! I have a 19 yr old and he is blind and has hyperthyroidism. But is hanging in there:)

ReplyDeletePoor sweet Gypsy! I completely understand. Our Candy was diagnosed earlier this year with diabetes, and we have to give her injections twice a day. We are keeping her in our thoughts. She is a beautiful girl.
ReplyDeleteLast week we adopted a cat from the shelter who looks very much like yours but darker and with a lond white beard. We had lost our beloved almost 19 yr old tabby, Sara, right before Hallowe'en and the house was very lonely. Our new boy,8 yr old Rudy, also has dental issues. Upper canines are gone and at the shelter he needed a serious tooth cleaning. I worry about him having to need regular dental work as they have to put them out to do it. Sara didn't have a lick of tartar and never chewed her food!

ReplyDeletePoor baby! I really feel for her. I once had my 4 impacted wisdom teeth out along with 4 other teeth. My orthodontist said my mouth was too small for my teeth. I know what Gypsy is going through, to some extent. All of my food went through a blender first!

ReplyDeleteI had an old cat that had to have a lot of his teeth pulled. His vet said these old cats manage to gum their food. He got dry food as well as wet but when they stopped making the dry food he liked, he wouldn't eat the new dry food.

We had a dog that had to have teeth removed, years ago. The vet planned on removing 6, but ended up removing about 15 teeth. Never slowed that dog down, eating wise. My current little dog is having knee issues, and was at the vet on Saturday. No walking, etc for at least 3 weeks. It's hard to keep a dog from moving around. Good luck with your kitty.
