Baby Quilts Everywhere!

I was delighted when my daughter-in-law picked out a rag quilt design for our newest grandchild's baby quilt!  These are fun to make and sooooo much easier than a traditional quilt!

All ready to toss into the washer and dryer to get that lovely rag quilt look & feel!!!

My son, of course, has some very particular ideas about what is appropriate for a boy-child of his!  Nothing "girlie" or even "babyish" is going to go in Mr. Cooper's room - No sir-ee!!!  He made some very specific requests for this quilt.....

1.     Only sage greens, creams and browns
2.     No animals or anything else "cutsie"
3.     Only stripes, dots and plaids allowed!

Wow!  That was a challenge, let me tell you!  My son is a hunter and loves the peace and tranquility he finds in the forest, and he wanted that feel for Cooper's nursery.  After working with these lush, calming colors, I decided to name this quilt, Tranquility.  I think that best describes the feeling my son tells me he gets when sitting in the woods in the crisp early morning hours, just him and God and the perfect sounds of nature all around them.

I know - some of you are saying, "How could he kill Bambi?!?!"  I said that too when he told me he had taken up the sport.  But it is not just a sport for him - he has the meat processed and they use the venison in many of their meals.  Then a few of my loved ones barely escaped with their lives after accidents with deer, and I learned about how even all the deer suffer from lack of food sources when their population gets out of hand.  Then my son shared the joy he gets from his time alone in the woods with God, so I shut up and began to thank God for giving him such a wonderful way to meet with Him so often.  The benefits have far outweighed my squeamish tender-hearted misgivings.  (And much to my son's dismay, the deer actually don't show up very often LOL!!!)

So.... back to Tranquility.....I was fortunate to have enough of the colors and designs in my cottons stash for the top.....some of them were even pulled from my scraps bin!

It's so hard to find plaids in yardage.

I only purchased one half-yard of this piece of Kaffe Fassett fabric to add some brightness to it.....

For the back, I had planned to use this pale, pale, pale sage green dots print to give it a nice light ruffle on the front between all the blocks.....

.....but after deciding on the size and number of blocks I wanted, I realized there wouldn't be quite enough of this fabric.  I had 2 yards and needed 2-1/2!  Of course, I only realized this after I had cut it into 8" strips!!!

It's an older fabric, so I didn't even try to find more.  I thought about doing some sort of a design on the back, like adding some darker blocks spelling a "C" for Cooper in the middle, but I just couldn't fall in love with that idea.  Then I remembered a flannel in my stash that I bought when Hobby Lobby sold off most of their fabrics.  I think I paid $2-3 a yard for this piece :)  Here it is, playing very nicely with the other fabrics..... don't you just LOVE those rich, chocolatey browns.... YUM!!!!

And I love that it now has a flannel backing!

This soft cream animal print works perfectly with the theme of the rest of the quilt :)

I chose to use a Thermore batting, which I have used in all my rag quilts.

This thin polyester batting washes well and doesn't add too much weight to the finished quilt.

I'll be tossing this in the washer and dryer today - yippee!!!  Cooper is expected to join us around Christmas-time, so I'm delighted to have his quilt, done and ready for his arrival!!!

And since I started this project this month (even though I finished it too), it is my November NewFO Challenge project......

End of Month Reports: September 2013

This month was not quite as successful as last month for getting things done, but all in all, I'm satisfied with what was accomplished - especially considering that I spent a week at retreat and a week getting ready for it.  All that cutting and washing fabrics - ugh!  It takes so much work to get ready to start new projects now that I have to wash everything first!!!

Summertime Wool Applique - remember this new project?

Vintage Valentine Table Topper gift for Mom....

I got a great start on this project by having all the fusible pieces drawn out and cut in advance!  I had prepared them for this block in the Vintage Valentine quilt quite some time ago - another of my UFO's.   So when Mom requested one of these blocks for her next tabletopper frame quilt, it was easy to just choose a block that had all the fusible papers traced and cut, but not yet fused to fabrics for the quit.  I chose all the fabrics and fused the pieces down on the background before retreat.  All I had to do at Runaway was stitch them all down with a buttonhole stitch - Done!!!  Now I just need to take an afternoon to quilt and bind it, adding a little hanging sleeve for the table topper frame.  This will go to Carolina with me at Thanksgiving :*)

Christmas QAL - Bargello Tree Skirt.... linking up with Needle-Thread-Happiness

Another new start for the NewFO Challenge is this Christmas QAL project that I have been wanting to dig into for the longest time now!!!  My goals list for September listed quilting my Blue & White "The First Tree of Life" quilt..... BUT, I am already quilting a much larger quilt right now which ties up my machine, and I didn't want to quilt at retreat - I much prefer to do my quilting at home where I have plenty of room and lots of tables around me to catch the quilts.  So I decided to start work on the Bargello Tree Skirt at Runaway.  This was a much more complicated project than I thought it would be - which is really saying something since I expected it to be a challenge! - so I didn't finish it, but I'm happy with the progress.  And since it is on my list of Christmas proejcts I want to complete for the holidays this year, I really just substituted one project for another on my Christmas QAL goals :*)

This will go on my October Get It Done list for finishing up!

Yes, they are pastels!!!  But they were fun to play with, and I'm crossing my fingers for something brighter in October LOL!!!

September Quilting Project:  Moonglow!!!

I'm adding a section to my End of Month goals.  I really NEED to get some of my projects quilted, so I'm scheduling those into my To Do list.  This month I've chosen one of the hardest projects on the shelf - start with the biggest challenge and it's all downhill from there, right???  LOL!!!

This is a Queen-size quit, so I will have to wrestle with it to get it done!  But I've done several queens before, so I know I can do it.  As you can see, this was basted on my friend Joanne's long-arm machine, so I didn't have to get down on the floor to sandwich and pin it - SO MUCH EASIER!!!  I will say though that my fingers keep getting caught in those huge basting stitches :*)

My first task was to stabilize the quilt, so I QID - quilted in the ditch - around the edges
between the center blocks and the borders - my Janome QID Walking foot makes this a breeze!!!
Or, at least it would be if it weren't black on black - so hard to see.....

Another problem with black - it picks up every piece of lint or cat hair in my universe!!!
I surely don't want to quilt those suckers down on my quilt, so....

I keep my lint roller handy and use it on each section before I quilt it.

Pebbling around the star points - VERY time consuming, but I'm liking the results so far....

Only 12 more to go LOL!!!
Now if I can just decide how I want to quilt the log cabin alternating blocks.....

Get it Done - September/October 2013:  linking up with Patchwork Times

September 2013 Goals:

• Finish prep-work on all materials for Runaway class - DONE!
• Continue washing Stash - Continuing.... lots washed for retreat projects, but not much since then.
• RSC Challenge blocks- DONE!
• Complete Genevieve's baby quilt - Top is DONE but it still needs to be sandwiched and quilted.  I had to talk to the Mom before I made a final decision on the backing.  All ready to go now!
• New Tabletop quilt for Mom (NewFO Challenge project)- Top is DONE!  Still needs to be quilted, but it doesn't have to be done until the week of Thanksgiving, so I'm happy! :*)
• Quilt The First Tree of Life - Didn't touch this!  However, I substituted starting my Bargello Tree Skirt for my Christmas project this month, and I got quite a lot of that done at Runaway :*)
• Start quilting Moonglow- DONE!  The quilting on this is going to take a LONG time!!!
• Make flying geese for Talkin' Turkey - Not done!  Joanne and Mary would not let me work on them at Runaway - they insisted that we only work on this project during our sit-n-sew times together!  So I will get started on these this coming Friday :*)
• Finish Dreambird Shawl - I suppose I was way too ambitious on this one considering I had a week-long retreat to go to and days of preparation.  I do have 13 of the 21 feathers done though :)  Look for a picture on Friday when I'll link up with Judy's On the Needles.
• Plan and prepare Runaway projects that I think I can accomplish in 4 days- DONE!

All in all, I don't think I did too very bad this month!  Retreats usually throw me for a loop as far as momentum - do they do that to you too?  I always think I'm going to get SO MUCH done, and then I don't.... but much fun was had, so that's what counts, right?

October 2013 Goals:

• RSC Challenge Blocks
• NewFO project - ?????? - I want to do a pumpkin project - will I have time???
• Quilting - Moonglow, Genevieve's Banners, Mom's Valentine table-topper
• Finish prepping and begin stitching on the next Summertime block
• Yarn Projects - start Wingspan knitted shawl so I'll have an easy take-along, no-brainer yarn project
• Christmas QAL - Finish Bargello Tree Skirt; start on Jovial if I have time
• Make at least half of the Talkin' Turkey flying geese
• Continue washing stash

The Blue Screen of..... Uh Oh!!!

Talk about a scary way to start the day!!!   I was just minding my own business this morning, happily enjoying a relaxed Sunday at home by reading some of my favorite blogs, when all of a sudden, the photo I was viewing pixelated in some totally weird ways, and then.....POOF!!!  The Blue Screen of Death popped up!!!  I wasn't quite sure what was happening, but I was pretty darn sure it wasn't good!  Good thing my very own Personal Technical Expert (my wise and all-capable hubby) was in residence and came running when I screamed LOL!!!

Friends, I don't have a clue what he did to our computer - he tried to explain it to me.... something about drivers and service packs and downloading a bunch of stuff (of which I understood not one word) - but in no time flat he had it back up and running - Hooray!!!!

We do have another computer - our desktop system upstairs - but this laptop downstairs is so convenient and only a few years old.  It would have been a shame to lose it.  Plus, I'm pretty sure there are quite a few pictures on here that we have not backed up on CD or flash drive.  You can be sure that will be taken care of this afternoon!!!

So, while my husband worked to keep our laptop from going to computer heaven, I picked up my Dreambird bag and headed out to the side patio to knit and calmly reclaim the peace of my Sunday!

I have 11 feathers done now and this project is really getting into a rhythm.  It's going quickly now that I pretty much know what I'm doing.  Of course, just saying that guarantees that my next feather will develop some sort of problem, right?  LOL!

One of the bloggers who has been instrumental in inspiring me to pick up the knitting needles is Denise Russart at Just Quiltin.  She is always knitting something new and beautiful, and making it look easy in the process too.  She's also a very talented quilt designer and offers some amazing patterns, often for free.  She's got a sale going on right now for a fun set of patterns - Dog Pound Pals Adoption Society.  These are some really adorable dog patterns, so check it out HERE if you are interested.  This past week, I received this fun mousepad that I won from Denise in a giveaway she held last month......

This weekend, I've managed to mark off a few tasks from my list....

I finished off the BABY BLUE scraps for the September Rainbow Scrap Challenge, making the above Lone Starburst block as well as my Hatchett blocks and left-over HST's (not pictured).  I'm not sure what I was thinking when I put these together - how is that fabric in the bottom right a "baby blue"???  Oh well... sometimes my brain just goes on vacation!  Thankfully, this is not a block by itself, and all these sections will be mixed up with the other colored sections I've been making all year for a scrappy rainbow quilt, and that darker section will fit in great with the overall quilt :*)

I managed a little slow-stitching embroidery on my Winter Wonderland, but not enough to post a new picture yet.  I also prepared the next pattern for my Summertime wool applique project......

The pattern needed to be reduced by 54% to get it to the 8-inch square-ish size to fit in with the other blocks for this project.  I will probably not do the dragnfly unless I can find a way to make it fit without distorting the block.  It also occurs to me that it might be fun to have a few colorful dragonflies floating free over the quilt... hmmmm.

My friend Daryl, who blogs at Patchouli Moon, shared a few tips with me about how she works with wool applique.  She doesn't use fusible because she says it makes the pieces harder to stitch.  She just uses an Elmer's Washable Glue stick and no staples.  I think I'll try that with this next block :*)

The rest of this week, I think I'll be busy doing some quilting.  Have to get ready for Oktoberfest the middle of October!  What are you up to this gorgeous Sunday?

Baby Blues - How Appropriate!

The September color for our Rainbow Scrap Challenge is BABY BLUE.... and I couldn't help but smile when I thought about how appropriate that color is for me, because we just found out that our little grandchild due in December is going to be a little BOY!!!

So sweet!!!  .... little fingers and toes to kiss.... little fluttering eyelashes to watch in fascination ...... little bellybuttons to gaze at in awe ..... little cries for Grandma to hold him ....

a future little Baby Boy knitting project???  LOL!!!

Okay, pulling myself back from the edge of the Baby Love precipice!  

Suffice it to say, we are very excited!!!

Sew ........... to get back to quilting..... 

Even though we have a new little boy on the way, I do not have very many BABY BLUE scraps - anyone surprised by that announcement?  No, I didn't think so!  LOL!!!  Actually, I don't even have very many BABY BLUES in my stash either.  But I did pull a few fat quarters to add to my scraps to make enough different fabrics for my RSC blocks this month.

A lot of my chosen fabrics are not technically "baby" blues.  Some veer off into the lavenders, some are more aqua.  But all of them are more pastel than bold colors, so they're going in.  I suppose I'll have to call my blocks PASTEL BLUES-ISH rather than baby blues :*D

And of course, I saved the selvedges for another project, another day :*)

I'm in love with those sweet oriental fans!

And how appropriate is this fabric?  Backyard Baby in baby blue - too cute!!!

With all that being said (I know, more than you really wanted to wade through, right?) here is my first block for September....  Fantasia in PASTEL BLUES-ISH!

Angela pointed out in her post that a lot of us tend to want to stick to the bright rainbow colors - and of course you know I'm all about bright colors, right?!?  But I also think those bright colors pop so much better when they have the lighter colors to back them up and let them take the spotlight.  I think these baby blues will really help the bright colors shine so much more brightly in the finished quilt :*)

On a final note, I'd like to introduce to you my newest member of the family - although she is definitely not a baby and she is not blue, I really think she is gorgeous!!!

I haven't yet named her, but she is a 1957 Featherweight - a very proper, well-behaved older lady with impeccable manners.  I'm in love!!!  My first Featherweight died in March - she just decided to grind to halt at a retreat and refused to sew another stitch.  I guess you could say I sewed her to death LOL!!!  So I have been without a good working light-weight machine for sit-n-sews since then.  I'd been keeping my eyes open for an affordable Featherweight in good working condition - and this one exceeds all my hopes!  She is a beauty with hardly even a scratch on her pristine surface.  This little lady has been keeping herself for me it seems :*)  We sewed together very happily today, and I couldn't be more delighted with her!

And lest I forget the other "little lady" in this house - not so well-behaved and with slightly less impeccable manners - this is what Gypsy was doing while I was working so hard on my RSC blocks....  do you think she has enough pillows there?  LOL!!!

In case you can't read cat expressions, she is telling me to go away and mind my own #@*&^% business!!!

Going Into the Red.....

But in a really good way!!!  This month the color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is RED - luscious, gorgeous, deep, rich RED!!!

And here is my scrappy RED Fantasia block for August....

Isn't that little guitar in the upper right corner just perfect for Nashville?  Hehehehe.....  I got a really late start again this month on my Scrap Challenge blocks (this time because I've been busy working on my Hexie Queen Blog Hop project which will post on Monday.  I think you're going to like it!)

Remember, a couple of months ago, I started work on Bonnie Hunter's Talkin' Turkey in a group with some friends.  It's an all-red quilt, so since I wanted to use up as many of my scraps as possible on it, I went through my scrap bin in advance .....

and pulled out all the pieces I wanted to keep for my regular monthly blocks for the RSC, and then I paired them together as they would be used in the blocks.....

That really was such a help this month, because I didn't have to dig through as usual and decide which scraps to use where and find matching pieces for each block.  I just sat down at my machine and started sewing pieces together :*)

I am wondering however if I have too much of the same color/texture fabrics in that top row together?  Those are intended for the Lone Starburst block sections, and I'm thinking I may have to raid my fat quarters to get some more interest going there :*)  The fabrics on the bottom will be used for the Hatchett blocks and little left-over half-square triangles, and I think they'll be just fine as they are.

I also decided to play with the little left-over pieces from cutting the curved sections on Fantasia this month, and these cute little blocks just materialized as if by magic on my sewing table ......

Aren't they cute?  There is just the barest hint of a curve in them - just enough to catch the eye and make one stop to look closer :*)  I have no idea if I'll ever use them for anything, but I just can't bring myself to throw away pieces of fabric this size just because I can't use them in the block I'm currently working on.  I can't find the pieces from the past months - surely I didn't throw them away - egads!!!  Hopefully they'll turn up in that mess I call "organization" in my sewing studio LOL!!!  And when they do, I'll make some more of these and see what happens.  I love to quilt serendipity style!

Slow Sunday Stitching

It's a gorgeous Sunday here in Music City Tennessee!!!  I'm looking forward to some slow stitching this morning.....

Remember Winter Wonderland?  With all the knitting I've started lately, my embroidery has suffered, but I did manage to get a little in while at my daughter's house.  This is my third block, and it is coming along nicely.  I just love these little snow-people!  And there's nothing like a gentle embroidery project to work on while thinking about things of the Spirit on a beautiful Sunday morning!!!

Later on I plan to start work on Genevieve's Live-Love-Laugh baby quilt.  I have quite a lot of planning that has to be done before I can put needle to fabric, so I'll work on that for a few hours.  Then I'll grab my knitting and sit with my hubby watching the Bridgestone Invitational golf tournament the rest of the afternoon.  Yep, it's looking like a perfect day!!!

Oh yes, and I almost forgot to show you a picture of my completed Lone Starburst blocks in AQUAS....

There were not many scraps in my AQUA box, but there sure were some fun ones!

Finally Putting Needle to Fabric Again!

It was so good to be home this weekend!  Although I did miss my sweet daughter (who still has not passed that @#$%^&$# stone!) and granddaughter, not to mention those cute little balls of fur!  (Click HERE if you missed the Kitten Cuteness Overload post =^..^=)

My Sunday was spent in the sewing room ALL DAY!!!  I cleaned up the clutter which had totally overtaken the room, and then I pulled out my AQUA/TEAL scrap basket.  There was not much there, but I managed to eke out my monthly Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks....

After so long away from home, my house was crying out for some attention, so I spent all day Saturday cleaning and rearranging some things in the upstairs bedrooms.  We've decided that our guest rooms look pretty sad - more like hotel rooms, and not very high-end ones at that!  There's a hodge-podge of furniture, and the wall decor is uninspiring, to say the least!  Not what one would expect in the home of a quilter, right?

So in the coming weeks, I will be redirecting my focus toward making these rooms more homey and comfortable.  Not much I can do about the furniture right now, but I can work on focusing the decor around some lovely quilts, both on the beds and the walls.  I have a variety of quilts that I use on these beds, but Moonglow is the one I want for the larger, queen-size bed.....

However, this top still needs to be quilted, so that will move up on my priority list :*)  Thanks to my friend Joanne, I sandwiched and basted this quilt on her longarm (see that post HERE), so it is ready to quilt and hopefully will get some love and attention soon!

First in the line of priorities however is our littlest granddaughter's baby quilt, and I hope to have pictures to share on next week's Design Wall Monday.

Cleaning up the Stash!

I have had a lot going on this past week, plus dealing with recovering from a sinus infection, so you haven't seen much of me here. I've been very busy though!

Here are my final blocks for the YELLOW Rainbow Scrap Challenge in June...

On the Needles, my Hibiscus Serenity socks have taken flight!  We traveled to Kentucky yesterday for a family gathering to honor my husband's father on his birthday.  Three hours there, and three hours back, so I took my knitting with me since I can knit in the car without getting carsick - Oh happy day!!!  The socks started out like this at the beginning of the trip....

All the increases were done in preparation for the heels and I had worked one heel.  On the trip, I finished up the second heel and got quite a bit done on the stockinette stitch for the leg on both socks - whoohoo!!!

I'm liking this method of Two-at-a-time, Toe-up, Magic Loop.  I would have made a stupid mistake and shorted the second heel if I had not had the first one on the needles to compare to.  And of course both socks will be the same length without worrying about counting rows or careful measuring.  You can click HERE to see the post where I show the pattern I'm using.

I will be traveling all this week too - visiting with my sweet baby girl and granddaughter in Savannah TN for a few days and then in Murfreesboro for the TVQA Spring Seminar, where I am scheduled to take 4 classes in 3 days - I'm tired already just typing that!!!  But I figure I should be finished with these socks by the end of that trip and hopefully will be able to share a finish on next week's On the Needles!

In preparation for my classes, I have had to do quite a bit of unexpected work.  Pre-washing all the fabrics for the classes!!!  Why would I do that, you might ask?  I have been seeing a natural medicine practitioner to figure out some of my health issues, and we have determined that chemicals in my system are playing a huge part in my health woes.  That's really not surprising, is it?  Not in today's world.  But unfortunately, we have pinpointed the most likely culprit as overexposure to the chemicals in fabric.  Yikes!!!!  Since giving up quilting is not an option, I am now faced with having to rid my considerable stash of all those chemicals before I get to play with them :(  This is a lot of work my friends!!!!

I have to admit, I had been kinda wondering if this could be the problem for a while now, but I kept ignoring that warming voice because, well, for one thing, I am lazy!!!  Okay, that's probably the biggest reason :*D  But, the other reason is that I really don't like working with washed fabric that much.  I love the bright colors and sharp look of a crisp new piece of fabric!  I can't ever seem to get it as "sharp" and wrinkle free after washing.

I'm using Best Press to put some starchiness back into it because it is supposedly chemical free.....

I'm not sure of that because I couldn't find the exact ingredients online, but that's what I'm told.  Not that I believe everything I'm told, but .... anyway.... you get the idea :*)  It helps, but I miss my crisp new fabrics!!!

I've decided on a plan of action.  All new fabrics will be washed before they go into the stash - period.  I plan to wash and dry them, then simply fold and put them on the stash shelves - I'll iron when I'm ready to use it.  Because I HATE ironing!  For my existing stash, I'll take a color at a time and wash them as I have time.  However, with FOUR classes coming up this week, I have a lot of fabric to get chemical free, fast!  One class project uses 30 different fabrics, and another uses mostly scraps - a ton of scraps!

I tried using a mesh lingerie bag to wash the smaller pieces, hoping to eliminate some of those dreaded strings....

A huge basket of black scraps to be ironed for one class...

I'm using my Sizzix cutter to cut the strips for the class that calls for 30 fabrics, so all those have to be done before I leave on my trip.  The fabrics for the other classes are washed and will get ironed and cut while I'm at my daughter's house.  

So, I still have a lot of work to do today before I can get on the road.  I will probably not have a chance to blog between now and my return, so I will wish you all a wonderful week, filled with all that you love most!!!
