Starting the New Year Off Right!

You've probably guessed by the total lack of any mention of food on this blog that I am NOT a cook!  I cook well enough to keep me and the hubby alive, and that's about it :*D  I really admire all the great cooks whose blogs I follow, and I'm constantly downloading and printing off yummy-sounding recipes - but I rarely try them out.  *sigh*

And, No, becoming a better cook is NOT one of my New Year's resolutions!!!

I did however want to cook up something nice and hearty for our New Year's Day chow-down.  Since neither Hubby nor I care very much for black-eyed peas - that glorious southern tradition - I decided to cook up a big pot of Bean and Ham soup!

You can't see the beans here because all the veggies have risen to the top :)  But they are there!  I soaked them for hours and then put them in the crock pot with broth, ham bones with nice chunks of ham ready to fall off into the soup, potatoes, celery, onion ......  Add some steaming hot yeast rolls fresh from the oven..... Ummmmm - we are going to be eating GOOD tonight!!!

And just so you don't begin to think this is a cooking blog (LOL!!!), I thought I'd show you what showed up on my doorstep yesterday afternoon.....

Sizzix had a super sale at the end of the year and I picked these two dies up for 65% off!!!  That's surely got to count toward making 2014 a money-saving year, right?

  1. I also do not care for black eye peas, so I cooked up some great northern and pinto beans, separately. A lot of beans, put I send some to my father and father in-law, since I am the only one who eats them here in the house. Happy New Year.

  3. Just had homemade chili and chicken noodle soup along with homemade breadsticks for New Year's Eve supper. Leftovers today. But I haven't found a great sale for getting a bargain on something I really need (like I really need anything), so I will have to work on that one. : )

  5. I do not care for the Southern traditions for NY's day . . . but I will do a pot of fifteen bean soup with a hunk of ham tomorrow! I didn't have time today! LOL! Happy New Year, my sweet friend!! :)

  6. Well that is yet another thing we have in common Teresa - as my DH likes to say "Deb cooks Schwan's better than anyone". When he retires I'll pass making dinner back to him gladly! Although I do enjoy reading cookbooks so that's kind of weird isn't it?

  7. We also made ham and bean soup. The only difference from how you made your soup is we do not soak our beans. We just put everything in the crock pot in the morning and turned it on. Do not lift the lid of the crock pot for about 5 hours. The beans are completely cooked when we are ready to eat.

  9. That is exactly what is cooking right now (or at least the beans are soaking overnight) for us to have tomorrow. We are getting 5-6 inches of snow tonight (actually right now since it's 2:25 am), so ham and bean soup sounded good to me too. I guess great minds think alike.

What a great sale on your die cuts. That is a good thing.

  10. I can cook, but I don't want to ... I could be quilting instead. Thankfully DH is a sweetie about chipping in with dinner preparations. ;-)

  11. I love black eyed peas but I my husband doesn't. I made pinto beans and ham in my crock pot. I am so glad someone invented the crock pot. Happy New Year.
