It's Blogger's Quilt Festival Time!!!!

I love joining in on Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival!!!

Click on the button above to go to the main page and check out
all the wonderful quilts and prizes for this year's Fall Festival :*)

Of course, this year Moonglow has to be my entry!

For those of you who are not already heartily sick of reading about this prize-winning quilt on my blog, following are a few more details of my Moonglow quilting adventure LOL!!!

This quilt is designed by Jinny Beyer - quilting megastar - and the fabrics are all hers too.  I fell in love with the quilt the first time I saw its picture in a magazine!  Then I found out it was available as a Block-of-the-Month, so I asked my husband for the set for Christmas in 2009.  It was the perfect gift because I got a new package every month in 2010.  What fun it was to open the package to see what that month's star looked like - and then ponder just how difficult it was going to be to make LOL!!

I finally finished the blocks and managed to get the top together in May of last year, then in May of this year, my friend Joanne let me use her long-arm machine to baste the layers together - what a blessing that was!!!!  No scrambling around on the floor trying to get it sandwiched!!!

I quilted this quilt with my Janome 6600 domestic machine - and as usual it came through for me like a champ!!!  This is a large queen-sized quilt, but I was able to free-motion quilt even the stitch-in-the-ditch areas pretty well - I only struggled on the center row with a lot of bulk under the machine.  For the first time, I used a wool batt in this baby, and I love the feel and heft of the quilt, as well as the loft and definition it gave to the quilting design.  It did add some bulk under the machine though.  My favorite reason for using this batt is that I love knowing it won't get those permanent wrinkles some quilts get in them after folding :*)

I finally got busy with the quilting process early this month in the hopes of getting the quilt in the Oktoberfest Quilt Show held here locally each year - and it won 1st Place in its category!!!

You can read more about that HERE if you like.

The quilting process was long and very strenuous!  You can read some of my quilting adventures with Moonglow HERE and HERE.  I think the marking took as long as the quilting did!  Since I was working primarily with a black background, I used the white Clover White Marking Pen (three of them actually!) and it also did a magnificent job.  It goes on invisible as a liquid, but turns white as it dries.  Then when you are done stitching, just steam out the marks - voila!!!!

Marking each line to make sure they were perfectly straight and at the right angle!
Then, can you see the swag line I drew in?
I used one of Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Circles as a template for the circles - worked wonderfully!!!!

The swag lines were drawn on, but the feathers and circles on them were all free-motion quilted.....

It's a little hard to see them because I used a similar color thread.  I tried black and it stood out like a sore thumb!!!  The corners got a simple swag/feather treatment to keep things cohesive....

The lines in the borders were kept organic - I didn't want to do anything flowery or feathery there.  I really like the nice clean lines of the quilt and those borders, so I just did the understated swag work and "piano keys" lines, and kept it at that...

My binding, as usual, was applied by machine......

I've learned how to do this so that it looks as nice as any hand-sewn binding on the front, and almost as nice on the back too :*)  The Judge had no negative comments to make about it, so I think I must have done a nice job.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing Moonglow in all its glory!!!

Your vote in the Bed Quilts division would be so greatly appreciated :*D

Please feel free to come back again and visit soon!!!

Baby Quilt in the Blogger's Quilt Festival :*)

I couldn't resist putting this cute little quilt into the Baby Quilt category of the Blogger's Quilt Festival!

The quilt is lying in the grass, but no sun so it looks like a black background - go figure!
It was made for this little baby grandson - doesn't he look like he needs a cute quilt with fun vehicles on it?

The fabrics for this quilt are from the Happy Town line by Jacquelynne Steves.  They were absolutely perfect for this project!

The pattern I used was Rescue Squad by Erin Wilcoxon in the Sept/Oct '09 issue of Quiltmaker.  I paper-pieced three of each of all three of the different vehicles....

......but then I decided one of these little ambulances had to go to make room for this cute little helicopter that I put in the top left corner of the quilt :*)

Pattern design by Quiet Play and sold on Craftsy HERE
The quilting was done with this wonderful set of Aurifil threads - all the colors I needed were right there!

The darker red was just the right color for working inside the vehicles, while the lighter, more orangey red was perfect for outlining the vehicles in the outer border...

I used the yellow to outline the vehicles, after doing a little red SID inside for stability....

I used that really fun red/yellow/lime dot for the binding, which turned out really cute I think!

Stitched down by machine of course - much sturdier for a child (and quicker for me!)

Of course, one of my favorite parts of this quilt is the backing - the Happy Town panel that gives him a place to play with his own little cars!

Now, be sure to go and check out all the other great quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival!!!!

And if you feel so inclined, I sure would appreciate your vote for Hudson's Heroes HERE!

Rainbow Pineapples are in the Blogger's Quilt Festival!

Have you been over to Amy's Creative Side to check out all the wonderful quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival?  If not, you definitely need to go!  But before you do, I'd love for you to get one more little peek at my entry in the ROYGBIV Category -

Rainbow Pineapples of course!

This scrap quilt was my project last year for SoScrappy's 2012 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Each month, Angela announced a color, and those of us participating made blocks from our scraps of that color.  I used my crumbs.  These little pineapples only finish at 3-3/4 inches!!!  The entire quilt is only 21" square :*)

I made this quilt without a pattern after seeing a quilt on Pinterest that I loved.
It was made by Barbara Polston and she called hers Birds Fly Over the Rainbow.

Each month I made 2 blocks from the color of the month....see those little fussy-cut centers? *cute*

And I made a paper-piecing pattern for the tiny flying geese to go around the borders....

I have to say, I am pretty happy with the way it turned out!!!

This past week, I took the quilt top to retreat and quilted it with my little Bernina... mostly stitch-in-the-ditch, with a little FMQ feathering on the corners without flying geese.  You can only see the feathers in bright light like this which washes out the color, but I was happy with them nonetheless.

......then I put the binding on yesterday ....all by machine.

And this is the fun print I used for the backing....

This is my favorite block....♥♥♥

I love the secondary designs you get from Pineapple blocks, don't you?

I hope you take time to look at some of the other fun things I've been up to here at A Quilt and A Prayer!  You can click on the HOME button at the top of the blog to read some recent posts, or you can click on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge or NewFO Challenge buttons - both really fun activities that I'm participating in this year.

Now, be sure to go and check out all the other great quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival!!!!

And if you feel so inclined, I sure would appreciate your vote for Rainbow Pineapples HERE!

Bloggers Quilt Festival

I just love the Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side!!!

Of course I have to join in on all the fun, right?  Here is my entry for Scrappy Bed Quilt .....

This is my Scrappy Bear Paws quilt, which my followers have seen many times before :*)  In fact, I just recently blogged about finishing it up with the quilting and binding.  But here are photos for new viewers....

The bear paw blocks were part of a Block of the Month program at one of our local quilt shops.  You paid $3 for the first block & pattern, then if you brought your completed block back each month, you got the fabric for the next block free.  I loved the scrappy look and had such a fun time making them each month, so I decided to make more for a bigger bed-sized quilt.  I ended up making 36 blocks total  for a good-sized queen quilt and added an extra-wide border with the little bear paw for corner stones as an added special touch :*)

I made the reds/neutrals half-square triangles for the sawtooth border as leaders and enders Bonnie Hunter-style, so that by the time I was ready to do the borders I only had to make about 50 hst's - the rest were already done!

.........  I also made a set of quilted shams to go with the quilt .....
