Boy oh boy, am I coming late to the party! But I just couldn't let the
Pets on Quilts party slide by without joining in, could I? Not with a beautiful kitty like Gypsy to share, right?
Gypsy is 17 years old this week - lookin' pretty good for an 'old lady' isn't she?
In these first pictures, she is sitting on "her" quilt. This is a quilt that I found at a yard sale. It was very dirty and all wadded up, half in and half out of a black plastic trash bag, lying in the dirt!!! I was so offended, I huffed out loud and grabbed it up immediately. I asked the lady how much she wanted for it before I even looked at it. I wanted to take it home and nurse it back to health! Imagine my shock when she said, "Well, is $3.00 too much?" Trying very hard not to appear too eager, I paid her quickly and left. I was even more surprised when I got it home and found that even though it was pretty dirty, it was unstained and in great shape, and it was even custom quilted!!!

"What are you up to now, Mom? Can't you see I'm trying to take a nap?" |
True story.... I took this quilt to my Guild meeting that month and told the story of finding it in the dirt. When I unfolded it to show the group, one girl on the front row blurted out, "I think I made that quilt!" Sure enough, after looking it over up close she remembered making it for a raffle several years earlier and never knew what had happened to it. Needless to say, we were all amazed at that coincidence!!!
|
"Uh-oh! There's that flashy box again!!! Don't you have any business of your own to get into?" |
The quilt was given a home on our sofa in the living room, and before long Gypsy had claimed it as "hers." Being a long-hair cat, she sheds like crazy, so I'm delighted to have something catch that hair besides my wine-colored sofa!!! Gypsy's quilt goes with us when we travel and helps her feel comfortable even in a strange environment. She is a true quilter's kitty and loves her quilt!

"Okay, you can play with that flashy box all you want - I'm taking my nap!!!" |
In the evenings, after hubby has gone to bed and I'm ready to relax, I have recently begun sitting in my recliner upstairs in my sewing room, watching taped TV, and working on whatever knitting project happens to be current. It's soothing and helps me relax enough to get sleepy - something that gets harder and harder to do the older I get LOL!!! Gypsy has caught on to my routine and loves to come sit in my lap and catch a few
zzzzz's. The minute she hears the TV come on, she shows up at the foot of the chair, ready to jump aboard.
|
If you look very closely, you can see that I snuggle up under my blue-and-white flannel rag quilt, My Blue Heaven |
Sometimes she gets aggravated with me though when the knitting yarn "tickles" the hair on her back, or if I move around for some reason and poke her with one of the needles LOL!!! Can you tell she was not particularly happy with me because I was trying to take her picture? Yes, her face is very expressive :*D If she were human, she would be Sophia on The Golden Girls LOL!!!
Here she has chosen to sit in the other recliner in my sewing room while I was sewing. This is my
Blue Pineapple Blossoms quilt, a
Bonnie Hunter design. Just in case you can't read kitty expressions, she is very
snarkily sweetly telling you all to have a wonderful week and to leave her alone now so she can take a nap!!!
I think at her age I'll take a lot of naps too!
I just hope I have beautiful quilts to snuggle up with like she does =^..^=
Sleep tight, my friends!!!

I just love your description of your fuzzy girls as one of the Golden Girls. I think if my kitten were a human he would be a thug! She is beautiful and definitely very deserving of a special quilt.
ReplyDeleteI loved the 'Golden Girls'! Oh, she is a pretty lady and love the story behind the quilt. So lovely that it found a home that appreciates it.
ReplyDeleteShe is a beauty (so are your quilts). If that had been my quilt, I would be so happy you rescued it and gave it such a noble purpose.
ReplyDeleteGypsy is beautiful and so is your quilts.
ReplyDeleteInteresting quilt rescue story. Gypsy must have heard it before--seems bored with the whole thing. : )
ReplyDeleteLove the "cat talk" captions.
Your lady is sure beautiful and she hids her age well. I have a furbaby with long air too. We just lost our other kitty a few weeks ago and we miss her terribly. Loved your story about Gypsy's quilt. Glad you saved it from the trash.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cat...so much grace and flair. Can't believe the story about that quilt. How amazing was that?
ReplyDeleteGreat post. She is a beautiful cat.
ReplyDeleteShe is so cute, I love the picture where she's curled up to sleep on her quilt!
ReplyDeleteTeresa Gypsy looks like one of the kittens my daughter just got from an animal rescue place. One has a tabby colored head and mostly white, the other is mostly white with a stripe of tabby color in the middle. They are the sweetest kitties, but my grandson I think is allergic to them! His eye got swollen and he sneezed (he has other allergies too). He is at his dad's house for the weekend, so we'll see how he reacts when he gets home tomorrow. She might have to give them back. And no my husband doesn't want them, even though he thinks they are sweet too.
ReplyDeleteCats and quilts just go together, don't they?
I love the story of your 'found' quilt! Those are absolutely the best kind of yard/estate sales. Especially wonderful that you also know the quilt maker. Sweet kitty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a story - so disheartening that people don't appreciate all of the money and time and love put into a quilt, sure glad that you rescued this one. And an amazing coincidence that you know the maker! Love your kitty!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED this post!! Gypsy is a very fine southern lady!!! Hope your weekend is relaxing and just how you want it to be!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Doniene
We should all be so beautiful in our golden years.
ReplyDeleteHelloooo ~ Let me introduce myself, I am Sweet William The Scot, and I am taking the tour of the quilts. I am more of a dog blogger, but I have made three quilts in my lifetime. Lucky you to find such a deal and then to find out who made the quilt. Gypsy's quilt is beautiful.

Teresa, I am so glad you found that quilt and were able to rescue it. A person often wonders what happens to the quilts they donate. Love the "Golden Girls" application. Yes, I can see your Gypsy being acting a lot like Sophia! What a hoot!!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilts and your feline model!
ReplyDeleteShe is adorable! And I enjoyed reading all about her!
ReplyDeleteI would never have guessed how old Gypsy is - wow!! She still looks fantastic... bright eyes and lovely!!
ReplyDeleteGypsy does not look her age at all. Great story about the quilt and so glad it has a good home now. susie x

ReplyDeleteI am cat#84 xo jan@sewandsowfarm
She is really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGypsy is such a sweetheart! Thanks for sharing your photos of her on your quilts (even if she wasn't particularly fond of you taking them all - I have one of those too... :) ).
ReplyDeleteKitty!
ReplyDeleteGypsy is such a lovely cat..and great quilts, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining our party!
Love,
Snoodles
Gypsy is beautiful and I'm so glad you were able to give that quilt a good home!
ReplyDeleteAt least Gypsy appreciates that quilt. I've never won a raffle quilt (but I've spent a TON on tickets). Some people just don't appreciate what goes into a quilt. Glad you rescued it. I've saved quite a few (mainly small quilts) and a few even have labels on them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post for such a lovely cat. I hope you and Gypsy have many more wonderful years together. I love your Pineapple Blossom quilt--the pattern is on my to do list. Wow, what a story of the quilt found at the garage sale. Thanks for sharing your stories!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post. Amazing to find a custom quilt in the dirt and then find the original quilter! Gypsy is a lovely assistant!
